What do you do all day anyway?

This is what somebody asked me the other day. I will not say who because I don't want him to get beat up by all the mom's out there. This person seems to think that I sit on my butt all day long watching soaps and eating bonbons. I tried explaining to him what I do all day long but I think he still believes I do nothing all day long. I'm wondering what all you moms out there or stay at home dads have to say about this. Maybe tell us what you do all day and then he will get the picture that being a stay at home mom isn't always easy. If the guy who asked me this is ready this, don't take offense to this. I thought it was funny what you thought. Eating bonbons, hah, I wish. I look forward to what people think.

you could have said it was me, i wouldnt have cared. but you're making it out to sound like i was serious. I was genuinely curious as to what you do all day, and i make no bones about it being hard work... i've been there when both kids are crying and pooping ... if all you did all day was to try to keep them happy that'd be tough enough let alone the cleaning and bonbon eating. oh and if you dont except this appology... just read the shirt!

I accept your apology. I thought you were being serious thinking I did nothing all day. I also know that you like to give me a hard time. I should have known better that you weren't being serious. Did you get my email?

Kirsten, I had someone ask me that one time and I don't even have kids yet. It is hard work just keeping the house looking nice and clean - let alone raising kids. Sure, I watch TV or read my email sometimes, but I bet a lot of that will even stop in a few weeks after baby arrives. Being a mother is perhaps the hardest job out there. You have to be a teacher, a first-aider, a counselor, AND a referee. It's like EVERY occupation rolled into one.

When did I sign up for this again???? haha.

Well you wanted to know what we do so here goes...

I get up when my child DEMANDS that I get up. I get her some breakfast and while she's eating I will do any dishes that Stelios made dirty when he got home in the middle of the night from work or dishes that we made dirty before we went to bed and I was too lazy to wash. By the time I clean up I get gabrielle cleaned up from breakfast, change her diaper and find some clothes for her to wear. I will play with her for a while or spend an hour trying to figure out what she's trying to tell me in baby language. By the time we finish playing a bit, it's time to prepare lunch for her. After lunch we play a bit more then I put her down for a nap. While she's napping I pick up the million toys around the house, put some laundry in, do the dishes, clean bathroon/bedroom/etc. Then I get a shower while she's still asleep. By the time this is all done she wakes up and wants a snack and then more play time. After that it's suppertime so I'm preparing supper. After supper it's playtime again and more cleaning. Remember that throughout all of this there are diaper changes and baths/cleanings/etc. I ALSO try to sit and watch a bit of TV or lie down because I'm giving birth in 8 weeks and would like to take a break at some point. This doesn't always happen though! For anyone out there who thinks this sounds like fun, it's not bad at all - HOWEVER, it's VERY tiring -especially when they hit 18 months and the temper tantrums start. They are exhausting all in themselves and feel like an 8 hour work day at a labour job!

Hope this gives a bit of insight for those who think being a SAHM is all fun and games! Having said that - I wouldn't change it for the world!

I've been to your place many a times and I have to say there is lots of bonbon eating but also alot more running after kids and making dinner and cleaning. I like to help out when I visit and by help out I mean I take over the bonbon eating.

My husband watched the kids alone for a couple of hours one night, and when I got home he said, "you really have your hands full, you have a full time job here." I was so happy that he really realized it, and was so appreciative of what I do, because until then I am sure he had no clue of what I did all day. You don't necesarrily have to be Suzie homemaker all day long just to have something to do. Just watching your kids and making sure their needs are taken care of is full-time enough.

I agree with Dayna that it can be very tiring but I too wouldn't change being a stay at home mom for anything.

Man, when Grayson is having a really fussy day, everything I do I have to do holding him too. It's amazing how good you get at buttering toast with one hand.
